We start our Madness Tour on February 18, 2022. Most of the country is coded "red" for terrible storms. We thought that the storms would already be through the area, but Eunice came right behind it. The day started out with beautiful weather - even a rainbow - and then steadily deteriorated through the day.
Along the way we saw a lot of swollen rivers. St. Peter's Church was a beautiful old church and grave yard. At about 3pm the weather started getting very windy. The rain started turning to snow just as we got to Bolton Abbey. Bolton Abbey normally has stepping stones, but not on the day we were there. Actually, none of the stepping stone options through out walk were available - they were all under water.
Most interesting was the bridge where Chris took a picture ten years before - so we could see a "before and after".
We stopped for a quick sit down near a beautiful valley and watched the river. We came upon a tea shop for a nice cup of tea and cake. It was nice to get warm and try to dry off before walking through the forrest where we saw 2 Roe deer.
We saw the first bunny after we crossed a bridge and while looking at sheep. We decided not to go to Appletreewick because the wind was quite strong at this point, we were concerned about trees blowing down on us and we were tired and getting cold.
Finally we get to the Red Lion Inn at Burnsall on our 15 mile day 1. We had a great dinner at the Pub. Chris had a pie and I had soup and a Caesar salad with anchovies and chicken. We split an apple/blackberry crumble with vanilla sauce.
