Brinnon to Ashford
August 28 was a LONG day of driving for poor Chris. I got a lot of crocheting done.
Through expert planning we managed to turn a 2 hour drive into an 8 hour drive, but at least we were away from the awful AirBnB, with fingers crossed for the next one. Not that we were in a hurry, but we bugged out of that place at 6am....and said good-bye to Seattle
We took the long detour in order to catch up with some old friends in the area. Steve and Erica live in easy proximity to the Canadian border, giving Erica (Canadian) easy access to friends/family. Steve is British (dual American citizen) and Chris/I know him from our HP days. They are both local entrepreneurs. We met at a local coffee shop in Blaine and had a very overpriced avocado toast and coffee (no photo, no plate, no silverware).
I expected to see many cozy coffee shops in Washington, but am repeatedly disappointed. Many are just small drive through structures called "coffee kiosks" that resemble shacks...
I took advantage of the detour to see my TMB hiking friend Sue. We normally catch up while she is laying over in London for an onward flight to another hike. It was great to find out about her local life and have a lovely lunch at a local cafe (tomato soup and toasted cheese). We explored the Bellingham, Lyndon and local waterfront areas.
We left just in time to experience the local rush hour, but were rewarded when we finally got to Ashford and our new AirBnB which is called The Lazy Snail Retreat.
The snails got a bit creepy....
but the house is cozy and there are a lot of extras - snacks, wood burner, BBQ, hot water and clean silverware!
It is nestled in a forested area about 3 miles from the Mt. Rainier National Park.
Dinner was an extremely overpriced bratwurst and hamburger. This place is known for its pizzas, which they stopped serving by the time we arrived because it was too close to closing.
There was, however, a live band - Dirt Angels.
For the next week we look forward to exploring Mount Rainier National Park. Stay tuned for these adventures in about a week.
