Greybull, Wy
September 23, 2026 - We took several days to get to Teton National Park. Today we spent the night in Greybull, Wy. The town takes its name from the Greybull River, named after the grey bison seen on its banks.
We sadly left the prairie dogs and Devil's Tower for our next destination. I think both of us found Devil's Tower much more interesting than we expected.
It turns out the high desert in Wyoming is the home to 350,000 pronghorn who roam wild. The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in North America and second fastest in the world, reaching top speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Only the cheetah runs faster, but pronghorns can maintain their speed longer. Despite the nickname "American antelope," they belong to their own distinct family (Antilocapridae) and share a closer genetic link to giraffes. They are the only horned animals that shed their outer keratin horn sheaths annually, much like deer shed antlers.
We drove by a lot of them today, but hard to see in this photo.
The option to drive via Broadus we wisely avoided. I couldn't face that awful salad again.
Instead, we drove via Gillette
and stopped for a meal at the PO News and Flagstaff Cafe, a diner in Sheridan. These adds are on the ceiling.
where I couldn't resist a toasted cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
The other highlight of the day was crossing Granite Pass in Big horn national forest which topped out at about 9,000 feet. There is snow there for 9 months of the year, according to the guy at the visitor's center.
Oddly, there were sheep grazing near the top of the pass and we saw deer grazing near the side of the road.
On the way down we stopped to see beautiful Shell Falls.
We ended up at the bottom of a canyon near the Shell River where we saw a rainbow at the end of the livestock trail
There were some interesting red rock formations, like this one that looked like an egg.
Not long after we arrived at Greybull.
And pulled into our motel - no comment.
The town borders the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe rail lines.
We had a quick dinner at the local Mexican - no photos. Probably the worst guacamole I've had, but surprisingly good chicken quesadilla and salsa.
After dinner we walked around town to work off the calories and saw some interesting sights:)
Tomorrow we are off to our second way-stop on the way to Teton National Park - Riverton. We were warned that crime is quite high in Riverton, so we are quaking in our boots.
